1930's Schofield engine

In the 1800's and early 1900's in Macon, Georgia their were two companies that competed and were located on opposite sides of town. Taylor Iron Works & Schofield Iron Works

In the 1930's the two companies merged. The Schofield design was still build, but was being built by The Taylor Iron Works.

Taylor also continued to build their own engines. It seams that all the engines build after the merger had both names, but the Taylor base was straight down the sides and the Schofield base was curved.

Our Engine

This is our Schofield engine made by Taylor Iron Works. It has a 15 inch bore and an 18 inch stroke.

Our Engine

This engine was used to operate a sawmill and planer mill in Ridgeway South Carolina at The Ridgeway Sawmill.

Our Engine

This Engine was purchased at auction in 1974 and moved to a building for storage. In 1984 the building was destroyed by a tornado and was left in the weather until purchased as a gift from my wife to me in 2020.

This engine has a shipping weight of 14,000 pounds, but actual weight without crating is 12,500. We assume the extra 1500 was for oak crating from the factory.

Besides this being a gift from my wife, the other thing that makes this engine special is the fact that it was cast and built in the south. Most engines were manufactured in the north.

The Schofield engine was moved and set on the foundation with the 1952 Unit 614 Crane.
